THE MANY SIDES OF CHARLEY HARPER
For nearly 50 years, world-renowned modern artist, Charley Harper (August 4, 1922 – June 10, 2007) called Springfield Township home. The Many Sides of Charley Harper is a placemaking project, skillfully designed by Micah Landers and made possible by ArtsConnect, The Ohio Arts Council and Springfield Township. This one-of-a-kind sculpture, designed to welcome residents and visitors to our arts-centered community, involved the public in its design through a vote of four Harper artworks which define the sculpture today. The selected art captures Harper’s graphic genius in interpreting nature in its most simple form. Harper’s “minimal realism” style reveals the beauty of his wildlife subjects, distilled down to their most simple geometric essence.
The Many Sides of Charley Harper creates a multifaceted sculpture experience, generating a new image when viewed from various angles, driving or walking by. Micah shares, “viewed from many directions, this piece is simply a collection of colorful shapes on blocks. Upon further exploration, the viewer finds that the piece resolves itself into four canvases, and that each colorful patch participates as a part of some of Charley Harper’s most iconic and beloved images.” We invite you to further enjoy The Many Sides of Charley Harper with digital experiences that will change regularly online.
