Visual Arts Workshops are short classes that give the participant a taste of a specific visual arts skill. Workshops are project-specific where the students come away with a finished product. Most workshops are one-day classes on Saturdays ranging between 2 - 4 hours long. Some workshops might be more than one class and offered during the week. Make sure to check the day your workshop is offered. Workshops change throughout the year so check the website and calendar often to see what new workshops are being offered.
PALETTE KNIFE FUN
Ages 14 & over

This 3.5 hr workshop will introduce you to palette knife painting. Participants will experiment with graffito, dragging and lifting to create interesting textures while trying various sizes of palette knives. Learn to define a focal point and fade out backgrounds. Please bring your own acrylic or oil paints. Canvas and knives will be provided.
Get creative and experience the art of glass mosaic. This two-day class is a great introduction to the direct mosaic method. Participants will learn glass cutting techniques, gluing and grouting applications along with tips on designing or modifying designs. Bring your own baubles to add a bit of glitz. All supplies included. Once you’ve tried your hand at stained glass you might want to register for our 6-week class to learn more advanced stained glass techniques.
Wouldn’t it be exciting to create and wear something that you actually made! Participants will use brilliant, vibrant, translucent dyes to paint a silk scarf. Using an exciting array of watercolor techniques, you will create a work of art beautiful enough to wear. All supplies and silk scarf included.
Our certified art therapist, Dr. Sharon Doering, will guide you in creative techniques to improve your focus and attention to detail. Participants will do several short creative and rewarding art projects. They will learn relaxation and meditation techniques to help with everyday stress. Learning mindfulness techniques can improve your overall attitude toward life. All supplies included.
Learn to paint like the masters! Many beautiful paintings from the Middle Ages and Renaissance were done in egg tempera. Egg tempera is a brilliant, semi-translucent paint that dries almost instantly. Watercolorist, Gary Brooks, will teach you how to make the paint using colored pigment and egg. Then manipulate this unique medium in a small painting sample. All supplies included.
Discover the magic of Alcohol Inks and their wildly colorful pigments as you create your own masterpieces. Using an assortment of materials and tools you will learn how to work on a variety of surfaces, including paper and tile. Learn easy, fun tips and tricks to make each one of your pieces special. Alcohol Inks is exciting for young and old. Parents register you and your child. They will LOVE it! All supplies are included.
This 4-hour workshop will cover the basics of embroidery. Participants will create a stitch sampler as practice, then get started on a project to showcase their new skills. Learn to do a back stitch, French knot, chain stitch, blanket stitch and lazy daisy. All supplies included. This class is held online via Zoom. Participants will receive an invitation to join the class prior to the day of the workshop.
If you have been curious about the art books then this class is for you! Learn basic bookbinding structures and stitches that every beginning book artist should know. Students will learn four basic structures and gain the knowledge to start making their own books: accordion folding, two versions of one-sheet wonders, and pamphlet stitch. All supplies included.
In this 3-hour workshop, learn the basics of stained glass. Students will get step-by-step instructions on how to cut glass, foil and solider. Participants will make a stained glass pumpkin decoration that they can proudly hang for Halloween or Thanksgiving Harvest Time. Learn various techniques of making jewelry using beads, jewels, wire and fasteners. Pick from a wide variety of beads and bangles. Learn to repair your own jewelry. Participants will come away with several pieces of jewelry that they can wear proudly. All supplies included.
Experience the technique of Lampworking, "The Art of melting glass rods in the flame of a torch.’ In this beginner class, learn to safely operate a torch and manipulate colorful glass rods in a flame to make doughnut-shaped beads. Experiment with different shapes and decorations. All supplies included.
Learn how to create your own Ukrainian Egg (Pysanka) Christmas ornament using traditional wax resist dying techniques and natural dyes. Participants will learn the history of Pysanka, and gain an understanding of symbolism and coloration of traditional Pysanka designs. Each student will leave with a completed egg, tools and dyes.
Class Cancellations & Weather Closings A minimum of six students must be enrolled for the session prior to the stated deadline for the class to take place (maximum 12 students). Due to costs incurred in planning for art classes, full refunds will only be issued when the Arts Council cancels the class. Class cancellations made within 10 business days of the class start date are eligible for a refund, minus a $5 administration fee per student. Refunds will be made by check, not to a credit card.
