Beginning and Intermediate Painting


Course Description:


Have you wanted to learn how to paint?  This class is for you with its introduction to color theory, paint mixing and painting techniques.  Participants are encouraged to bring either oil or acrylic paints. Exercises and handouts will help to teach participants how to compose a painting, emphasize a focal point and create a mood. Fellow participants will support each other in the process of learning how to paint what is observed. 

Class Structure:


Evening Painting

will take place on Mondays from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. in the art room at the Springfield Township Community Arts Center, the second building back on the campus at 9150 Winton Road.

Daytime Painting

will take place on Mondays from 10 a.m - 12 p.m. in the art room at the Springfield Township Community Art Center, the second building back on the campus at 9150  Winton Road.

Classes will begin with 30 minutes of color exercises and demonstrations of painting techniques followed by an hour and a half of studio time for participants to work on their paintings.

Classes Cost

$85 per session for non-members and $76.50 for members.

Class Supply List:  Participants will be asked to bring their own supplies. Supplies will be explained on the first day of class.

Instructor:  Katherine Smith

Katherine K. Smith is an artist, art educator, and the Education Director for ArtsConnect. She holds a B.F.A. from Wittenberg University and both a M.A. in Art Education and a Ph.D. in Educational Leadership from Miami University. Her paintings and murals are found in homes, public buildings, and as illustrations in books and book covers. Her published writing is found in teaching, curriculum, and education journals. Katherine has served as an adjunct instructor for Miami University, Oxford, Ohio. She has taught curriculum leadership classes and Art Education classes for Elementary Education majors and has taught Art Appreciation for undergraduate students. Katherine also consults with Woodford Paideia Academy in Cincinnati Public Schools to assist with their integration of the arts into the classroom curricula. Prior to her university teaching, Katherine was a middle school art teacher at Tower Heights Middle School in Centerville, Ohio. Katherine has conducted research with ArtsConnect.
