Beginning and Intermediate Painting:  Watercolor and Acrylic


Course Description:


Have you wanted to learn how to paint?  This class is for you with its introduction to color theory, paint mixing and painting techniques.  Participants are encouraged to bring either watercolor or acrylic paints. Exercises and handouts will help to teach participants how to compose a painting, emphasize a focal point and create a mood. Fellow participants will support each other in the process of learning how to paint what is observed. 

Class Structure:


Evening Painting

will take place on Wednesdays from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. in the art room at the Springfield Township Senior and Community Arts Center, the second building back on the campus at 9150 Winton Road.

Daytime Painting

will take place on Mondays from 1:00 - 3:00 p.m. in the art room at the Springfield Township Senior and Community Art Center, the second building back on the campus at 9150  Winton Road.

Classes will begin with 30 minutes of color exercises and demonstrations of painting techniques followed by an hour and a half of studio time for participants to work on their paintings.

Classes cost $85 per session for non-members and $76.50 for members.

Daytime Instructor: Marlena Hebenstreit

Marlena Hebenstreit grew up in a family of professional artists in Cincinnati.  As a young girl, she admired the old masters and her current work is influenced by their techniques.  She is educated from the Cincinnati Art Academy where she studied painting and figure drawing classes taught by her mother, renowned portrait painter, Carin Hebenstreit.  Marlena was formally trained, as well, by Mike McGuire of the Cincinnati Academy of Design.  Marlena manages a studio at the Pendleton Art Center, Cincinnati, where she creates and sells her paintings and artwork. Marlena is teaching the ArtsConnect Morning Drawing and Daytime Painting for Session 3.

Daytime Instructor: Susan Mueller

Susan L. Mueller is an artist living in Cincinnati. Over the past fifteen years, she actively pursued her interest in art with art workshops and classes at the Art Academy of Cincinnati, Baker-Hunt Foundation, and Manifest Drawing Center. Local instructors include Ken Buck, Charlie Berger, Bruce Neville, Savannah Tate Cuff, and John Leon. Outside the area, she studied with Christopher Shink, Skip Lawrence, Judy Morris, John Salminen, Sue Archer, Carol O’Conner, David Drummond, Judith Carducci, Bill Fletcher, and Robert O’Brien. She is a member of the Ohio Watercolor Society, St. Louis Watercolor Society, and the Cincinnati Art Club.

Susan attended the University of Cincinnati, graduating with a MBA in Finance. Over the past 30 years, Susan worked in personal financial planning, earning a CFP (Certified Financial Planner) designation, then moved into Business Appraisal, earning through education and experience, the CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst) and ASA (Accredited Senior Appraiser) designations.

Evening Instructor: Heather Hitchman

Heather Hitchman is an Associate Professor of Visual Arts at Southern State and the Nature Shop Manager at Cincinnati Nature Center.  Heather holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Art History and Art Education from Mt. St. Joseph, a Master of Arts in Art Education from Miami University and a Master of Fine Arts Degree from the University of Tennessee. She is currently enrolled in a doctorate program that focuses on Community Based Arts Education.
