Your kids will have a summer packed with imaginative, creative and fulfilling art projects in the ArtsConnect Kids Camp. Unlike any other art camp, this program empowers kids to make a difference through their art. We employ certified art educators, ensuring your kids are exposed to a wide range of artistic skills and media. Campers will learn about cultural differences and stewardship of their environment while creating projects from puppetry to public murals and so much more. The ArtsConnect Kids Camp offers before and after care if needed. Experience a week or an entire summer of art!

ArtsConnect Kids Camp Overall Goals
The ArtsConnect Art Camp is not a traditional summer camp program. We give children the necessary resources and instruction to flourish as young artists. We also strive to educate them on how they can use their artistic knowledge and artistic skills to make positive contributions to their communities. Our camp curriculum has been created with that intent. We have employed counselors who can successfully create, implement, and reflect upon art lessons and also serve as positive role models.

Our camp runs with support from ArtsWave!

Session 1: May 30 – June 2, 2017 (This is a four day camp week.)

Kids will re-discover their neighborhoods by seeing them in a new way. They will translate architectural elements of older homes into colorful, postmodern renditions and collectively plan their own city using box sculpture techniques. Kids will learn to positively affect their own neighborhoods through their artwork.

Session 2: June 5 – June 9, 2017
Fee Fi Fo Fum, I Smell Puppet Fun!

Kids will learn about the parts of fairytales and create their own unique stories for a puppet show that will include backdrops and stage props. Kids will perform their puppet show as the opening act for the MadCap Puppets performance during the Puppets for Lunch community event!

Session 3: June 12 – June 16, 2017

Sole Design

Have you ever noticed the impression of your shoe tread? Campers will get to step in clay to see the artistry in their tread. They will create contour drawings of their shoes, design and create a new shoe prototype out of clay, and redesign old shoes with paint and decorative objects. Kids will be empowered to give back to the community by collecting shoes to send to areas where shoes are needed.

Session 4: June 19 – June 23, 2017
Landscapes, Cityscapes, and Mindscapes

Have you ever looked long enough into a landscape painting and imagine yourself in it? Kids will imagine landscapes and become familiar with perspective, monoprinting, collage, painting, and mosaic techniques using recycled materials. Campers will install their recycled mosaic in the community to remind others of the importance of recycling and caring for the environment.

Session 5: June 26 – June 30, 2017
Lifesized Friends!

Sometimes our best friends can be our pets, family members, or peers. Kids will learn about portraiture and how to capture their friends’ images. They will also build life-size sculptures that will be installed at our campsite!

Session 6: July 2 – July 7 (Cancelled for lack of registrations.)
Bug Out!

Kids will delight in bug races that will inspire creative, new bug designs in oil pastels, basket reed bug sculptures, and Fabergѐ inspired mosaic bugs. A visit from a beekeeper will teach campers about honeybees and their job in keeping our community blooming and fertile. Campers will make beeswax carvings to remind community members of the importance of honeybees to the environment.

Session 7: July 10 – July 14, 2017
Authors and Illustrators

Eric Carle, Leo Lionni, and Lauren Long are all author/illustrators that inspire young artists. Campers will explore these author and illustrator styles with bubble printing, marbleizing papers, acrylic texturing, monoprinting, watercolor washes, and splatter painting. These discoveries will lead to cut collage illustrations that will spark the imaginations of our campers as they tell stories with art. The new stories will be bound into books. Campers will also artistically decorate a “Little Library” to install in a neighborhood park.

Session 8: July 17 – July 21, 2017
Cultural Patterns Around the World

Is a culture the result of a group’s location, ecosystem, rituals, or artwork? Campers will ponder this question as they learn about what makes a culture and how cultures are different and the same as their own. Kids will imagine their own tribes with imagined ecosystems, rituals, traditions and artwork. Kids will design 3D masks. Patterning found in African art will inspire block prints. Traditional batik printing on fabric with color dyes provide another surface for more pattern making!

Session 9: July 24 – July 28, 2017
The Rhythms of Salsa

Salsa is a style of dance that originated in New York City by the Caribbean, Latin American, and Latino communities that lived there. The music is known for its fast beats and involves complex Afro-Cuban percussion. Artists have often tried to depict fast-paced music with their artwork and our campers will explore how non-representational artwork can depict such rapid and colorful beats. Campers will have a chance to design and create their own maracas, create folk art by carving Latino inspired Santos figures out of plaster, and explore multiple viewpoints of one object as inspired by Spanish artist Pablo Picasso. On Friday, they will enjoy an outdoor concert and can try cuban food.

Session 10: July 31 – August 4, 2017
Celebrating Wildlife

Campers will learn how to care for even the littlest creatures in the community. As campers research the animals that live near them, they will create drawings, pinch pot sculptures, monoprints, and colored paper abstractions of animals as inspired by nationally recognized and hometown artist, Charley Harper. The campers will also design and decorate bird houses to be installed in a Springfield Township neighborhood park.

Session 11: August 7 - August 11, 2017
Sunny, Splashy, Summer!

As summer comes to an end, kids will reminisce about summer beach vacations with sand paintings and sculptures. Days at the pool will be remembered with acrylic paintings in the style of David Hockney. Memories of camping and hiking in the woods will return as campers create twig and leaf drawings and rubbings. A visit from a park ranger will teach campers how to be good stewards of the green spaces in their community while the fireman will aid them in ending the summer in style using the fire trucks and quite a bit of water!
